  • A new venue and a new reel for us today.

I'm a bit embarrassed by putting this in "catch reporrs" but oh well, we did catch, just!

After the end of the run of our play last night, we awarded ourselves a day off from Kayos, had a long lie, a massive fry-up and a read of the Sunday papers. With the skies angry and high tide at 5pm there was no rush.

I had just purchased a "brand new" Shimano st1000ra off another site for an incredibly low £22. I wanted to try it out, so although the weather was unpleasant and we didn't have a venue in mind, I still really wanted to get out for an hour of two.

So around 330pm, we headed out to a place we had never been, but it is only 3 miles up the road, so gave it a go. As you can see it's a bit ramshackle.

Newark Castle. Who would build a castle next door to a shipyard!

So on went the daylites and cast out. Loved the reel, so smooth, the second Shimano we have now and I think we will stick with these, very impressed. Debating with myself whether to buy the xtr6000 he's also offered me! First cast and we were both into fish. We knew they weren't Mackerel and also small. In came Saithe about 5 inches long! This continued every cast. At first fun, but soon became tiresome and also we don't like catching such small fish, in case they don't survive. We changed to spinners.

Being close to home, I ditched the pink crocs for a more demure brown pair, although Lynn wore hers. Spinners did indeed stop us catching the small stuff, but also didn't produce the desired Mackerel or a Sea Trout a guy told us regularly get caught here . After about an hour, I gave up with the fishing and took some more photos. A collection of small boats and an angry sky.

Lynn then caught another tiny Saithe, not much bigger than the spinner. She took a picture of it, or so she thought. When I uploaded it, this is what she actually took

A slagging from me I think! Anyway a fun couple of hours and we might try it again one day. Sorry the photos are a bit dark, but is was so grey overhead today.

It was indeed Duncan, very muggy. Lynn now tells me her fish dropped through the piles of the pier one second before she took the photo

      Yeah right !!

Nope just a pait of crocs! I think the Mackerel fishing is over for the year. Really nothing in the upper Clyde in winter except dogfish and various small species, so shore fishing probably over for us now. Of course next month we have 3 charters booked in Hartlepool, so praying for calm seas.
