  • Roker pier pots..29/07

Had a trip to Roker pier to stock up the freezer with mackeral today, with Jonny my son,we caught 21 between two of us.They came in dribs and drabs over 3 hours from 10.00am.Caught all but one on feathers/daylights(or night lights as I told one young lad as he asked if I was catching them on DAY LEETS).Anyway your all thinking yeah yeah, anyone who can chuck a lead out will catch a fish when the mackie are in,but the reason Ive put this report on is to have a bit of a go at commercial fishermen,in particular the ones who decided it would be funny to drop his pots about 50 yards from the pier, deliberately manouevering hi boat to cause as much hassle to almost every angler on the pier, evryone having to either reel in,and alot of the guys getting snagged on his lines.
I know these guys have to make a living ,but these two guys were laughing at the fact that they were being a pain in the a..e to almost every angler on the pier.He could have dropped his pots another 50 yards further out and he would have been out of range from most of the anglers out there.
Dont know if anyone saw the boat in question it was a blue coble with a forward wheelhouse, some of the guys fishing around me reckoned he deserved to have a lead or two aimed in his direction, well I dont condone that at all but he certainly had a lot of anglers backs up!!

Hi mate I was talkin to you on saturday with my mate who had his nesa hoodie on,a week ago the same boat was retreiving his pots and him and his mate seemed more interested in pulling the ropes up and see how much gear they had retreived,we watched them taking the leads off the daylights and even untangle them!!!!!was the same with a few blokes next to us who were gonna start launching their weights at his boat, could be put out a bit further but they probly making more selling the leads and daylights than what's in his pots!!

av asked this question before, as i think the pots of ss pier and tynemouth pier are in range of casting, but was shot down and burned by a do gooder, because these lads pay good money to fish these pots,
and we don`t pay good money for tackle,
the pot`s of blyth or cambois can`t be reached by any cast av ever seen,
so a think the lads are rite, there just doing it to collect tackle/weight`s......!

there was a guy off hartlepool who dropped his pots very close in while the mackerel were about.

i was told he did it to get a supply of spinners etc for his own use.

I like you other lads find this a strange place for the boat fishermen to drop their pots, (in casting distance of the piers). However I think the reason they do this is because around the piers at this time of year it is rich in fish guts from the hundreds of filleted and gutted mackerel and with this you get lobsters and edible crabs feeding in great numbers.

              Regards Rushy

you may have a point rushy, but in my experience`s, lobster`s live on rough rocky ground, not just around pier`s/jetty`s.

still think the lads drop there pots too close ..........!
