Big beach and ss pier 13/4/12

Set up about 50 yards from the south end. Wind was strong and a canny sea on. Second cast I had a flatty, can anyone tell me what it is? I still can't tell the difference.
The wind got worse and it was quite uncomfortable, lads turned up on what looked like surf boards but had paddles but right where we were casting. They wernt local and after I told them a 6oz sinker on the head would hurt, they moved.
Friday the 13th kicked in and I had a crack off and me mate tripod went over and his new Abu went in about 4 inches of sea water. Will this need to be serviced now?
Fed up with the wind blowing across us we headed to the pier. I hate the pier as I can count on one hand how many time I've cast out and reeled in without loosing everything. Set up on sea side about half way, just before the block like thing on the wall. Is this a good mark or did I hit lucky? Was much better with the wind behind us but we did get wet of the waves breaking inside the pier walls. First chuck, not only did I get my gear bk but I got a coaly and then a tommy a couple of chucks later. My mate blanked. Kept a few packets of rag for this morning but the rain put a stop to that, hence writing this at 7.20 on a Saturday morning.
All fish taken on rag nd prawn or prawn by itself. Never used it before but it's all they would take.
We did have some company in the way of this chap
He didn't move all evening and turned his nose up at the coaly. Wasn't sure if he was injured and stuck but it wouldn't of been hard to roll in the drink if he wanted.

All in all good session for me but not for my mate.

know what you mean about the seal seen plenty of them at st marys! you want to help them but know you shouldnt and your not sure if there hurt or what cause its the way they look at you aswell haha!!

Flounder - are rough when you rub the skin and they have a streight lateral line and useually don't have orange spots but they can.

Plaice - are smooth when you rub the skin regardless of direction and have bright orange spots scattered across their flanks. But sometimes the spots aren't as distinct as you picture them

Dab- looks exactly like a flounder with small differences the main Give away is the semicircle in the fishes lateral line can't be mistaken :

It's the same with polack and coalie, coalie have a streight lateral line, polacks has a kink near the gills. The two can look very similar depending on their conditions they live in

Give the reel a good rinse under the cold water tap dry off with a towel & leave to dry out for a couple of days then give a spray over with wd40 should be fine, good idea to get them once a year

Just give the reel a good rinse in fresh water and then pop in an airing cupboard or warm place for a few days. you can then give it a quick oil. If you are confident with taking a reel appart, it wont harm it to take the side plates off to ensure all the moisture is out of the guts of the reel. The guts of most Abus are a mix of plastic and marine brass so a quick dunk wont have done any damage. As a rule i partially strip my reels down to give them a look over after every 5 outings. I only fully service them once a year unless they need it more.

A very good report m8t and i fished the south end on Sunday 100 yds from the groyne and didnt do too bad but the cross winds were terrible and your flattie is defo a flounder okay but well done to you and better luck the next time.

Just to edit the above post. Flounder are rough but only going up their lateral line towards the head.

Dab are rough all over their body when going from tail to head and plaice have very smooth skin both ways. Great way to tell difference as sometimes markings can be deceiving

Nice report mate. At low water on a big tide I wouldn't fish before the 40 marks as there's to much kelp to get caught up on when winding in.
