    Myself ..Rottenbottom (plus his chav son)..and Paulanth had a look down to Spillers for a few hours to wet a line, tide was well out so didnt expect alot of action...i wasnt wrong!, rotten got himself the first undersized flounder about 11am then the little chav followed suit, and about lunchtime paulanth got an undersized whiting and i finally managed to break my duck with an undersized flounder, then, in between running to hide in the car or under an umbrella from the rain, the little chav pulled this up!!..we are guessing its a smelt but we were pretty stumped at the time.
    ... and dont they have a distinctive 'cucumber' smell! lol...tide turned but was dragging everything and anything back up the river so i decided to call it time...bait we used was mussel and mackeral, difficult but good day and crack all round hope to get out again soon to improve on the catches!

    was a good day out mate apart from the lack of fish and the boat catching my line grrrr, but the good crack made up for that, thats defo a smelt mate,i think your supposed to inform alan charlton on here if you catch one,i done a search on here and a few have been caught in the river lately.looking forward to a few more fish next time

        Aye mate it was a canny day,rain, lack of fish and the weed spoilt it abit but hey thats fishing theres always next time.and that little chav son of mine whoooooped your ass.

                never seen one of those before and have fished the tyne all me life!
                will certainly keep me eyes open next time im out cause i know what im looking for now
                so there a protected species then wonder how many people have caught these thinking there whiting

                    it was caught on mackeral and i would estimate it at about 22cm.

                      Hi lads you can cach max ov 8 smellets on rod and line and keep than as long it no bigger that 25cm if bigger than 25cm got to go back red that on net

                        No mate,in america longfin smelt are,unfortunately there not protected over here but they are in danger from falling numbers
