                    Forty years ago, when we went to Arran on holiday every year, my uncle took me out on a hired dinghy from King's Cross, at least 4 times each holiday.

                    The guy who hired the dinghys gave out Hermit Crab for bait as part of the hire. Worked a treat for big cod, haddock etc (in the days when the Clyde still had big fish).

                    When he had no Hermit Crab, he was always very apologetic and gave us Scallops instead!!

                    Can you imagine using Scallops for bait now?

                    Changed days indeed, 40 years ago they were used for bait, now they are a food delicacy and cost a fortune to buy!!

                      id say if a fish swam past it it would be hard for it to resist its food . worth a shot

                        They do fish very well on our coast I try not to use them fresh as the tail/sack is just a bag of mush and hard to keep on the hook I freeze them and carry them in a cooler box or food flask to keep them frozen in there shells I then break the shells with a pair of pump pliers and remove the tail/sack and whip it on frozen ideal for tipping worm baits and bulking up fresh shore crabs when in short supply, This winter I have had a few cod off hawthorn using them alone;
                        You should have been here yesterday.
