Generally you don't need much of a chuck on whitley, 40-50 yds is about right. As to where to fish - that's the 64,000 dollar question. It's generally best fished when there's a good northerly sea crunching in and the tide's not too big, as a lot of the marks will empty out over low water.

If you're not too familiar with the area I'd suggest starting around the Panama area, or in Big Bay (to the left of the rendezvous cafe) about 2 1/2 hours before low water. As the tide drops back you can move onto the rocks in front of the cafe (Wilkies) or to the left of Big Bay you've got North Skeer. To the south end of the beach you've got Old Salts Hole & the Half Moons, but they're both best fished early as they'll begin to empty out. It's all pretty mixed ground, some marks a bit heavier than others, but order of the day is usually a simple 2 hook flapper, 1 up 1 down, and experiment with baits to see what the fish are taking. I'd definitely want crab, lugworm & maybe a bit of razor & mussel.

If after a few chucks you've had nothing, then move. That's the key to this beach, the fish can be very localised, and you've got to be prepared to hunt them down.

Use a gripper, but don't have the wires set too tight - just enough to stop it rolling to much but easy enough to break out if you find a snag. If the sea's really big then you might need to tighten up the wires.

As lads were finding earlier in the week, there were a few fish to be had ( a few double-figure bags taken), but given the number of rods out (must have been at least 35 when I was there on tuesday) there weren't great numbers, and an awful lot of people were leaving with empty bags.

When the sea's away it's much easier to spot the holes, which all tend to be close in & you can see the waves breaking on the reef about 60-70 yards out (depending where you are & the state of the tide). You can give it a bigger chuck if you start early, and gradually drop shorter as the tide drops back or fish more of the the flood to get to where the fish are (hopefully)

Low tide's about 12.15 am, so I'd be looking to start around 9.30-9.45pm. It's a 0.6m tide, so you might lose a bit water on some of the shallower marks.

Yeah, as a rule I'd fish about 2 1/2 hours down & maybe 1 1/2 hours up - sometimes fish come on the flood so sometimes a bit longer!
