Decided to get my spinning rod out Sunday afternoon and give the pier a shot. It was a bright sunny day so I expected it to be busy and it was. Loads of people walking up and down with a few lads bait fishing along the length and the expected crowd of mackie bashers on the end. Anyway I arrived about 3.30pm (one and a half hours before high water) and started spinning at the rail end then I slowly worked my way up the pier spinning both sides as I went. Nothing biting but I pulled out lots of seaweed and other stuff floating about harbour side. After about an hour I picked a spot just after the blocks which was the only free space left near the end. I still didn't manage to pull anything in but nobody else was catching either. After a while the mackie bashers were getting bored and wandering off so I managed to get a spot by the small wall and landed my only fish of the day - an extremely small coley which was hiding under a blanket of froth near the steps. So at least I didn't blank. Anyway I chucked it back in and carried on. I was the last one off the pier as the Port Authority lad was locking the gate (except for the half a dozen lads staying at the end) and after a five hour session over high water I only had one tiddler and had lost three spinners to snags. I only saw two other fish landed the whole time I was there both of which were on floats - one mackeral and one small coley. The fish must have known I was coming and all buggered off. Ah well. Maybe next time
