Fished the end of shields after the macky bashers left, from the start into good sized coalies. as it got dark small codling turned up a couple on size, all went back.
Then about 10:15 when there wasnt a soul on the pier i went for a slash, with no one around to watch my rod i knocked the drag back and put the ratchet on as id been getting fish and the seal had been about and didnt want the lot going overboard, as i walked back i saw a good bite and one sudden pull of line, ratchet off, drag up, strike good fish on. !. bent the newly built wr300 double could hear the high build round the eyes creak, giving the fish some stick to get it up, got half way in pumping and winding then the fish drove on the bottom of a big swell and went solid, the sheer horror dawned on me, it was stuck wouldnt budge with the rod, i was on my todd so give it some slack and had a cuppa coffee, went back to the rod wound down it came but only couple foot, started to hand ball it and could feel it breaking through kelp or some old lines and it came, picked the rod up and the fight was back on, pump and wind all the way to the shockleader was on the reel, began to walk it round against the ebbing tide and swell but the fish was thumping bending the rod right over, put the rod down and began to lift and then it was off. Wound the line in and the trace body was there but the rotten bottom had snapped and so had the 30lb super snood hook length, gutted.
Decided to have a last cast as pretty much out a bait and pulled in a one just under 3lb.
