  • Hebburn marina 31/5/2011

My mate and I fished Hebburn marina from 12.30 to 15.30, we used rag as bait, first cast wasn't great as the incoming tide snagged me up with a buoy there was only a small gap left between all the boats, and I have only recently started using a multiplier, so a bit of a challenge, after the first snag on the buoy I started using spider weights to good effect, after an hour i caught a good sized eel that had made a right mess of its self in the rig had to cut the rig to bits to get it out uninjured not that it was very appreciative of my efforts, then an hour later just before hightide I caught a nice flounder a little bit over 1lb which was returned safely despite my mate wanting to take it home to eat, explained to him that though edible they are very high in vitamin mud, and that there were better tasting things in the river ( possibly the eel ? ).
    Unfortunately my mate blanked.
We were joined after 30 minutes by a young lad and his grandad who explained due to his eyesight not being great he doesn't fish anymore but enjoys coming down with the bairn, both of them seemed dead canny and I was very impressed with the lads casting with a multiplier when asked he explained he was initially taught and has always used a multiplier.
Unfortunately the lad blanked but him and his grandad went at 15.00 to find a different mark so hopefully they caught something.
Had a good day the weather was nice enough and the good company was an added bonus.

Well done on getting out and not blanking.

Those boat buoys are a bit difficult to get past, especially if you arent used to multis mate.

Well done on catch mate. If it's a bit tight with the boats you could always follow the track along to the quay, there's nothing there and clean ground

yeah it was a bit of a pain, i could see you could drive about another half a mile along but it looked like, though not as bad but still a lot of boats that way as well.

but then again they've got as much right to use the river as us, just wish they'd leave a bit more space for the anglers, as to the right of the jetty were the boat ramp is there is loads of space and only a couple of boats.

Yeh, drive right along and you come to a barrier where you can park up then leg it past the barrier downhill for about 2 or 3 hundred yards and bingo! you come to the quay. No boats or owt there, easy fishin mate.

Eels are now a protected species and should be returned alive. However they do make good eating ,cut into inch sections and slow cooked covered in butter.

Yeah eels have a great flavour and no annoying little bones. I used to like to bake them in a tinfoil parcel with a splash of white wine , delicious. Sadly the eel population has declined by 90% in recent years so they are now considered endangered and should be returned.
