  • Holderness Coast Trip 20th May

checked the forcast yesterday morning and bingo there was a break of settled weather. rang stu up and told him to get his gear sorted and the crab out for a long drive to suceed in the hunt for the elusive hounds we failed to get last season . anyway time we was sorted we got down a couple of hours before high tide .

straight away stu on his first cast produced a nice hound 5lb which is hes new pb

then second cast he gets a bass probs about 2lb

then not long after another nice hound around 4-5lb

when at this time i couldnt figure out what was going on with no bites for me so the moaning started and sand kicking
it worked 1 rod went and so did the other which produced these
a PB hound for me 7lb 8 ounces

    another one

i ended up with 5 hounds with stu taking 2 and a bass we decided to get a couple hours nap and headed back to the car

back down for some more action for a couple more hours before heading home i took another 5 hounds out in a couple of hours and stu had 2 more out

this one was bang on 6lb

total tally for our trip 10 hounds for me 4 for stu and his bass

maybe another trip planned soon to target some more species

Well done on the hounds, getting a few like that makes the drive worthwhile.

One bit of advice though looking at the pictures (and for anyone thinking of heading that way and giving them a go) - if the hounds are around you really should go down to one rod only and make sure you slacken the drag on your reel right off. If a double figure fish comes along and you aren't on top of your rod then you can wave goodbye to your gear - I've seen it happen more than once when I lived down south and fished Selsey / Pagham.

It nearly happened to me - fishing a beach not noted for smuts I was using two rods. Reeling one in I saw the other come out of the rest and go horizontal with the beach. Luckily I was standing right next to it and grab it otherwise they would have been off towards the Isle of Wight never to be seen again. The culprit was a 10lb 12oz Starry Hound:

They are an exceptionally powerful fish, great fun to catch and great fighters but also needing a lot of respect.

Very nice mate - after a couple of doggie-bashes over west recently, seeing those pics has really whetted my appetite for some proper babbie-sharks
