I went out this morning for the first time i have fished this year.
Also the first time that I have had a chance to use my new rod and reel (all be it 2nd hand) that i got at the end of last year..
ALSO the first time that ive ever used a multiplier reel from the shore!

The mistake I made with my reel I kind of predicted in a way, rather than strip the existing line off that I got on the reel when I bought it and start again from a fresh like I had originally planned to do, I thought I’d save the time and money and use the line that was already on thinking "it'll probably be alright"..
Big mistake, my first ever cast with a multiplier which I had planned to be just a short lob anyway until I got the hang of it ended up a very short lob when after 20yards or so the reel jammed and ended up in a bit of a birds nest, fortunately I was probably being over protective with my thumb which stopped the nest being too bad. Managed to sort it out after cutting off a bit line and reeling a load of walking down the pier to untangle it on my reel.

Reattached my shockleader and away I went again.
On my 3rd cast I caught the Plaice in the photo (my first ever Plaice), not far undersized I’d say but had no ruler or scales!

Had a couple more bites after the Plaice but didnt get them hooked on. Was however enjoying getting used to my new gear and growing in confidence with my casting. That was until my last cast when I was starting to go for it a bit more, was managing a decent distance I’d say when BANG another tangle in my reel snapped my line causing a monstrous birds nest this time (see photo)!
Gutted, think the guy I’d bought the reel off on eBay may have booby trapped it!

Had wanted to keep fishing a while longer especially with the bites I’d had but the thought of trying to sort that reel out with numb fingers didn’t appeal to me at all.

Anyway, bought new line now and am going to sort it out this afternoon at home then back down again tomorrow morning with the rest of my bait. Make the most of it while im still off work!

Thats a nice birdsnest - no excuse not to put new line on there now. With the 525 make sure your cast is smooth, sounds to me like you were gaining in confidence and hitting it harder then ended up snatching one hence the snap off. Also watch the mag slider as it is easy to accidently knock the mags off as you reel in.

Well done on the fish though I'd say it was a Flounder rather than a Plaice, difficult to tell without a bigger picture but I've never seen a Plaice without bright orange spots and the body shape looks very Flounder like.

Was definetly a Plaice, the photo doesnt do it justice was trying to put a full size picture on but failed! When I reeled it in the first thing i noticed was the Orange spots on it which you cant see in the photo on here, just when you zoom in on my phone.
As far as the reels concerned im happy with it at the minute, will reserve proper judgement until ive loaded it with my own line and can cast with more confidence though, but im sure its still going to take some getting used to, I've only ever used fixed spools for years..

          Write fish, wrong species.

By the looks of the picture mate u didnt catch a plaice, it was a flounder. Plaice have bright red spots, which the flounder in the picture did not. A flounders spots are very, very faint.

          Sorry to disapoint!

haha, alright then not to worry! I didnt realise Flounders had any Orange spots at all hence me straight away being adamant it was a Plaice! Never mind I'd never caught a Flounder before either so all's good to me!

Just zoomed in and got better quality out ov picture using microsoft photoshop. Its definatly a flounder mate. Theres spots there but there very faint, which flounders have.

Also plaice shouldnt be around just yet as they are spawning this time of year.

Well done on the fish mate which as said looks like a flounder.
Thing about nesting like that is that it p****s you off that much that you go on a very fast learning curve to prevent reoccurence. It sounds like you were doing ok until the last chuck when you may of lost technique when going for longer cast so you're probably nearly there. Mind you it's a cracking nest!

its a flounder if ive ever seen one. ya can tell what it is even from the small picture. as said flounders do have spots aswell. try turning the fish over plaice are usually more round and more of a brighter white in colour than the flounder also the mouth is different.

well done on catching your first flounder though mate !

Just had a bit of an afterthought, it would be a nightmare if when casting out yer new reel without changing the line that the line changed colour and diameter after 50 yards or so!
