I went out this morning for the first time i have fished this year.
Also the first time that I have had a chance to use my new rod and reel (all be it 2nd hand) that i got at the end of last year..
ALSO the first time that ive ever used a multiplier reel from the shore!
The mistake I made with my reel I kind of predicted in a way, rather than strip the existing line off that I got on the reel when I bought it and start again from a fresh like I had originally planned to do, I thought I’d save the time and money and use the line that was already on thinking "it'll probably be alright"..
Big mistake, my first ever cast with a multiplier which I had planned to be just a short lob anyway until I got the hang of it ended up a very short lob when after 20yards or so the reel jammed and ended up in a bit of a birds nest, fortunately I was probably being over protective with my thumb which stopped the nest being too bad. Managed to sort it out after cutting off a bit line and reeling a load of walking down the pier to untangle it on my reel.
Reattached my shockleader and away I went again.
On my 3rd cast I caught the Plaice in the photo (my first ever Plaice), not far undersized I’d say but had no ruler or scales!
Had a couple more bites after the Plaice but didnt get them hooked on. Was however enjoying getting used to my new gear and growing in confidence with my casting. That was until my last cast when I was starting to go for it a bit more, was managing a decent distance I’d say when BANG another tangle in my reel snapped my line causing a monstrous birds nest this time (see photo)!
Gutted, think the guy I’d bought the reel off on eBay may have booby trapped it!
Had wanted to keep fishing a while longer especially with the bites I’d had but the thought of trying to sort that reel out with numb fingers didn’t appeal to me at all.
Anyway, bought new line now and am going to sort it out this afternoon at home then back down again tomorrow morning with the rest of my bait. Make the most of it while im still off work!
