Have only returned to sea fishing this year after a 30 year absence but have noticed that the numbers of parasitic worms in the fish gut seems to have increased.
Caught a decent whitey on Thursday evening off Seaham pier and when gutting it I found that it was infected by what seemed like hundreds of tiny worms. Filleted the fish and washed off all visible ones, then put fillets in the fridge overnight. Had a look the next day and found even more worms that had actually drilled into the flesh of the fish, needless to say I didn't eat the thing.
Is this something common in all fish nowadays?
Has anyone else noticed this?
Is it increasing?
Is it something local to an area?
Should we be concerned?
