  • Seaham Last Night

Well gents i got to my mark about 2.30,blue skies and a slight westerly blowing. The sea was well coloured and there were some fairly large waves and breakers coming on shore, some as large as 2 metres but i was not to be detered, this was gonna be my day. There was only 1 guy fishing and he give up at just after 3pm.
Me and my mate set up and cast out,my mate was using rag on a pennel rig and i was using lug and rag on a 2 hook flapper.I had nothing on first couple of casts but then changed 2 lug on both hooks on the flapper and away we went.Knock after knock, cast after cast but couldn't convert.Decided to change to a smaller hooked flapper,2/0's may have been slightly too big so i put on a size 1 top hook and 1/0 lower hook flapper, rebaited up and launched it seawards.
Within 10 minutes i got a small knock and then rod tip went crazy,so in she came and i brought in a lovely clean coalie right on the legal limit.Decided to return it safely to fight another day.
From about 4pm the promenade started to fill up with fishermen between 20 to 30 in total.Glad i had got there early to get my spot.
Continued to fish as darkness came in and after having lost a few bits of gear and respooling my multiplier after getting one mother of a birds nest,i was back in the water again and i ended up with a couple of rockling, new species for me.1 was a good size just on 14 inches long, the other was smaller at just on 10 inches. Both safely returned to the water.
Fished til 8.30 and had knocks right upto the bitter end but with the strength of the sea and the big breakers struggled to convert any others.
All in all it was a good afternoon and evening although i still didn't get my cod.Better luck next time.

There was a bloke and his son fishing to my left and at about 7.30 his rod nearly took off.He managed to grab it and we just stood and watched at the line was stripped from his reel, whatever it was just took off.He fought it for about 30 minutes and managed to gain line back on it.I've only ever seen a rod bent like his was on test curve videos.Eventually whatever had took his bait let it go. It was amazing to watch thou.

If I had to guess I'd say he'd caught a coalie or a Whiting and it was grabbed by a seal pup. I've fished with lads who've caught high double figure smoothhound - one of the hardest fighting fish in British waters - and even they don't take line like that.

It took line off like there was a 7lb barble on the end of it.
