After three unproductive sessions on the beach I decided on a change of tack last night and headed up to South Shields pier. With HT at 23:15 I got to the pier for 8pm, the plan being to fish the 44 as the tide flooded then head for the end to fish the ebb.
First few hours were very quiet, had a solitary bite at the 44 that came to nowt until about ten pm when I pulled in a nice plump Flounder. With no other action I decided to head up to the end and fished the last hour of the flood at the small wall. Second cast this seemed to be rewarded when I go a stonking bite, unfortunately when I struck I was also snagged and despite letting out slack I ended up pulling for a break
As the tide turned I moved round to the brass ball. It wasn't long before I had my first fish, a long and very skinny Whiting then about 1am I was finally rewarded with my first codling for two weeks with a fish of a little over 1 1/2lb. Fished on for another hour with no more bites, I was going to call it a day at 2am when I pulled in a decent sized Pout. This encouraged me to have one more chuck and I'm glad I did as the result was another codling, slightly smaller than the first but still size at 40cm and a smidge over 1 1/4 lb.
Had another couple of chucks but nowt more and I packed up shortly before three am. In truth it was quite hard going, almost 7 hours fishing for two codling, a Flounder, a Whiting and a Pout but all good fun and at least I didn't blank.
