well got me letter from the court today, for fishing where i was not supposed to be, i got a fine of £61.00 in total, wonder if i go back on again this year.. probably not though get sick of the cat and mouse games lol....
was talking to the guy who opens the gates on roker pier the other week well moaning to him about pier being closed when it could be open as its not that rough and how we got no where to fish when pier closed and he mentioned the new gates that are being put up and that we fisherman should all get together and ask the council to put the old gates back along the barrier as it very rarely comes over from there downwards. i thought that would be fine as it would stop half of us going over to where we not allowed to be and would stop most of the damage to the fences and save them a bit of money lol. dont know about you lot but i wouldnt mind if they closed the 2nd set of gates as long as we could fish to the barrier again whats your thoughts

Sorry about the fine mullet but if your going to climb around locked gates that are locked for your safety then you probably deserve it, as for there being no where to fish when the pier closed thats rubbish, the rat house, shields pier up to the gates, hendon prom, the walkway etc etc etc, lots of places that don't need huge casts.
    Anyway thats my two penneth.
Stay safe, too many people are lost doing this sport on this coastline.

They'll never put the gates up at the barrier again. Ok, the sea rarely runs that far, but the fact is it does, and there are at least one set of gates lying in the bay as a result.

that will never happen, the whole point of putting up the new gates is to improve the look of roker pier and putting them dirty gates half way along the pier would never happen.

I used to fish roker pier a lot but because the pier gets closed as soon as waves go over the pier i now fish alot of other makes which have resulted in better fishing for me.

i fish all over the place, but there comes a time when ya get sick of fishing in the river cos the pier is closed and you can see its safe to go on.. because it is splashing over on the end... which by putting the gate halfway along would then make it safe for fisherman to go on and fish and catch decent fish..

It would be nice for them to do that but like the lads say it will never happen shame i know.

When the pier is shut there is loads of spot to fish not just the river south shields have a canny pier try there.
Feel free to take a look at my blog.

buy a pair of waders and try a beach mark - honestly your eyes will be opened up even more...don't really like piers and river marks as much as getting down and dirty on a windswept beach

                Roker Pier

Just reading your posts, thought I would reply!

Do you think Roker pier; or any pier for that matter, was built for fisherman!? The purpose of the gates on the pier is to protect the public when the sea is rough! Do you seriously think that whoever looks after the pier cares whether people fish from it of not?! I think not!

They are hardly going to move the gates on the pier for the sake of a few people fishing!

In my opinion, if you climb round the gates, you deserve to get caught, and deserve the fine!!! Glad an example has been made so more people may take notice!

This is a very interesting subject as i climb gates everytime i go on the Heugh as does everyone else. Being prosecuted is something that i cannot do with me being a cop.
I am aware if it was the big pier at Roker they are very strict about hoying you off. It happened to me once. I was peeved but when its official you just have to bite the bullet.
Personally now i,d just head for a sheltered mark. Like the Walkway.

Hear Hear, if it is safe enough to be on a pier then there is probably better fishing elsewhere on a beach. Piers are always second choice venues for me, give me an open beach and a good surf any day of the week.
