Safely.
If you are going to start swinging the lead then doing so safely is the most important thing, because getting it wrong can mean life or death for the angler next to you. It is a huge responsibility.
80lb shockleader, properly tied rigs (not the cheap and nasty jobs off ebay) and a rod that is up to the job are all essential. Start by learning and mastering the OTG cast YouTube - Casting with Frank Butcher Part 1 there is no point trying to pendulum cast until you have. Best way to learn is with an instructor or get along to a casting day. I've cast with all the lads Dean mentions except for Tommy, I've also cast with Mark Jakins (he taught me), Steve Boyt and our very own Jamie Blakeman who is awesome BTW. Without fail they are willing to answer questions, offer help and guide you in the right direction. If you are serious get yourself along to NESA at Kirkleatham (see the links in the casting section below), plenty of top blokes there who will see you casting well and safely in no time.CLIP IT AND WHACK IT

Hi Dean Mark taught me low swing, I'd say for casting my style is somewhere between his and Steve Boyt's but nowhere near as good (by maybe 70 - 80 yards )
I've fished Horden a couple of times since coming home and tend to use a slightly shorter drop than I would on the field and more of a mid type swing. Much less of a power arc though - on the field I cast from about 270 degrees but on the beach with my TTLD (only 13' compared to the 13'10" of the Crest) it is more about 200 degrees with less of a step. I've hit the sand a couple of times but I put that down to me messing up rather than the slope of the beach.CLIP IT AND WHACK IT

We're going off topic but Mark is the new Mr Whippy - he's done the '99 but no flake as yet.
You're right though he is a top bloke, as are 99% of the other lads I've met on the casting circuit. And FWIW I reckon Bazz should clear a weekend, pack the car and get Jamie down to Steyning where with the right condtions we would probably see the first ever 300 yard OTG cast.CLIP IT AND WHACK IT

Without sounding funny i think pendulam casting as with most other things is as hard as you make it, be positive about it and with a bit of a hand off someone in the know and plenty of practice you'll master it. Now am not claiming to be a mighty pendulam warrior or the best not by a long shot but the way i was taught it was very easy, well for me anyway.
I started out just practicing the swing and getting a feel for the lead then when i was happy with that i started doing gentle casts just to get used of the rythem. I think learning this way makes it easier because you get used to swing quicker then you can start dialling in more and more power as you get used to it and get more confident. Dont get hung up on someone esles style either because thier sytle might not suit you, you'll find a swing that suits you yourself in time. Remember distance isnt everything but a handy string to your bow and if you can get help take it.
Hope this helps mate
