fished blyth pier lastnight from around 7-10.30. first fish was an eel of about 2lb. also caught a small coalie and a dab. bait used was mackerel. the wind was howling and for most of the time i was the only one on the pier with the occasional person coming to try for mackerel but there were none caught.

Pretty sure there is a ban on taking eel at the moment unless you are a good few miles offshore.

            eels banned

there is a ban on taking eels, i cant specify the ban but i put them back anyway, have had 2 in the past 2 sessions and they always go back, had to cut the hook of the one off the pier as it was deep hooked.

I must admit I never knew about the eel ban.then again it's probably over 15 years since I done any serious bait fishing.and probably over 25 years since I used to fish for big eels in the wanny estuary.

I only read about it on this forum sometime recently , otherwise I would not have a clue

Hi Karl, I went on the pier 2nite, about 6ish, fished till 8.30, only saw 2macky caught on the end, I had 1 coalie an 1 flounder, returned safe, water still a bit murky, the flatty I caught still had a hookin its mouth and trace attached, sinker( spider ), but managed to clear it and it went away swimm like a gudd'n, 2 of our ethnic Bro's where catch undersize coalies and keeping em for the pot!!!!!!

unlucky wayne, i was thinking about biking down but didnt think there would be much caught. everytime i go on the peir theres always people keeping undersize coalies, but they dont have a size limit so they can take asmany as they want...

wasn't fully sure, knew it was similar to some other species tho.

tip - i used to use electricians tape in various colours on my rod, measured from the tip ring down and put a band of tape slightly larger than the minimum sizes for the main species we catch with the intent of keeping. saves buying a measuring board and gives a quick and easy check on the size.
