Wansbeck Estuary

Headed down to the above on Wednesday hoping for some large Flounder as I've had some belters out there in the past. Started as far up as I could next to the Dam more or less fishing under the fly over. My thought was that this area that holds water at all stages of the tide must deeper as the fresh water drops in and gorges the bottom out a bit therefore must hold the flatties at all stages of the tide....... not a sniff here though. I started fishing about 3 hours before high water and worked my way down the estuary towards the boat yard on the south bank to areas where I've pulled good fish out in the past but nothing. Peeler crab and rag baits coming back untouched. I ended up fishing off the small concrete jetty area at the boat yard and managed to pull one out straight away. That's all I managed in a 3 hour session but I'm going to keep trying this venue as I've had a few out over 2lb and I'm determined to pull a monster Flounder out this area.

I want to try float fishing for them with a long flowing hook length with beads and an attractor spoon, anyone tried float fishing for flatties and had any joy?

Think any form of movement will attract them if there bud the tide pushes hard through the channel by the concrete platform you mentioned. Christened my smld at this mark with 2 good size founder on first chuck :-D . Very spikey aswell if you catch it right :-D:-D

Its not the same as it was years ago over fished by match anglers like the blyth the fish aren't there in the same numbers, also when the road was widend
a lot of rubble/hardcore was added under the fly over last time i fished it the best part was from the slipway up over fishing between the boats

I only ever caught flounders on kipper down there crab and worm baits never did nothing for me down there

Fished there when I was a teenager and im 38 now, had loads of flatties there at the time and literally 5 yards out from the north bank, my kids are going to sandy bay caravan park in may and I wad hoping to show them where dad caught fish many moons ago

fingers crossed not much has changed mate, I've only fished the south bank

Mostly flounders and eels, small (4"-6") coalies and whitting.

Early in the year i've seen sea trout caught on mackerel strip they tend to gather around the bottom of the dam wall waiting for the big spring tides so they can get over the dam wall, you also used to get the bailiffs there aswell cheching that no one is taking them without a licence

I caught some big Flounder last year along with the usual Coleys and Pollock from Whitby pier. Even off bottom I was still getting odd flounder among the other fish.

Whitby piers a canny way from the river Wansbeck
