I've not managed to get out fishing this Winter as much as I would have liked to due to work commitments and today is my first day off since November 1st and boy I was looking forward to putting in a good fishing session last night.
I headed North with pal Big Gaz to one of my favourite fishing holes in Beadnell, the Nacker Hole. We were taking a big gamble on the weather men being right this time and hoped to catch the hole just as the sea was dropping off. I'm glad to say the weather boffins actually did get it right this time and the hole was just fishable with care!
Big lug baits tipped with squid were our bait of choice and I was straight into a fish of 2lb only for it to get hung up on a ledge 10 yds in front of me, with waves pounding in my hook length went and it was one nil to the Nacker hole.
Gary was next into a fish of a similiar stamp and this one he managed to land.
As the tide dropped along with the big swells we were able to access the ledge that I'd previously lost a fish on, I pulled in a couple of 1.5lb'ers that were put straight back and then had a good bite which resulted in a 5lb'er and my best fish of the season so far. Wrapped up in kelp stalks and a piece of old rope I thought this one was a good double!
A 3lb'er and 2lb'er were next for me.....
Big Gaz pulled in another 2lb'er and then had an almighty bite that was clearly the best fish of the night, rod bent double with the fish nodding away on the end, halfway in his rig snaps and the fish was gone! Tie your knots better next time Mr Gaz!!! lol.
As the tide flooded and pushed us back along the skeer, instead of fishing into a kelp forest I found a gully bottom of clean sand and finished a good night off with a nicely marked Flounder and a fish of doom, a Rockling.
We battled through blizzards and numbing cold down to minus 5 last night but it was certainly worth it in the end. Here's to more Cod bashing over the festive period.
Tightlines and a Merry Christmas. J.V.
