went out last night ....only the second time for me this season....so armed with only frozen bait..although it was peeler and black lug...i decided to try the beach at seaton carew...queen street to be exact.....i fished a couple of hours down and one up..this meant i could get onto the scar next to the gulley..which didnt completely empty as the water was being pushed back in by the onshore wind (and tide was a 1.2 last night i think)
i decided to use some peeler which i froze earlier this year complete with shell and lungs as an experiment......either this would loads of save time or i would lose a dozen crab...
the rig was a pulley rig with a 4/0 sakuma.....the first cast was baited with the runney down...so while that was fishing i shelled a frozen crab which had thawed nicely.....
second cast was baited with just the peeler...
after a couple of minutes the rod was nearly pulled out of my hands...and....out came this...guestamated about 4 - 4 1/2 lb
(sorry about photo quality -- mob phone)
next cast was baited with the frozen crab.....got couple of knocks and i struck but lost it on the way in....
3rd cast decided to put a big bulky crab bait on.....nothing...
4th cast back to a small single crab bait.........nothing
5th cast small crab and a runney down.... a small whitey
a couple a more casts with crab and lug ....nowt
back to small crab baits.....and got another small undersize codling.....
there were 4 other anglers on the beach ..2 either side of me.....they only had one cod between them....that came to cart i think
not a bad night really and i was back home for 11:30 after a bit gossip at car with the 2 of the anglers ( from stockton....Davey and Geordie i think ???....one of which had borrowed my wellies)
so was i just at the right place at the right time or did the frozen crab make the difference ....even being frozen with shells and lungs...
the couple of crab i had left which defrosted are now back in the freezer....and who knows ...will they catch ?????
cheers
Paul
