  • Eels in the river tyne.

    fished the river last week (mill dam) and caught a 3ft eel, i dont know much about these but could it be possible it was a small conger eel? when i unhooked it the slime off it was like wallpaper paste on my hands, also took 3 small codling around 1lb mark. all went back safely...

    ill try and upload a photo of the eel soon, cheers for any info.

    Probably more likely to be a common eel (european eel), they can get to a decent size with the females certainly able to exceed 4' and more. Mucous coating on them gets on everything, it's a pain.

      its head was diffrent looking to a european eel, ill get the photo off my m8s phone and put it on..

        Probably a big fresh water Eel,the british record is 11lb 2oz.
        Now is the time when they are off to the Sargasso to spawn.
