  • changes at shields pier?

Alreet lads, talking to the pier watchman last week after he had cleared the pier of every one fishing(a fair few) early last friday and closed the gates, supposedly for the divers coming on although the divers werent bothered and you are normally allowed to still fish the piers.any ways the watchman says a new guy is in charge at the port of tyne and the pier is going to be the same as north shields.Closed for fishing the no fishing signs went uo weeks ago,(which everyone ignores),cameras are going up this week or next and it is going to be policed 24/7 by security guards on call out from the control centre.says theres been complaints from tourists about fishing congestion(macky bashers) and the watchman are noting how much rubbish they remove and any bad behaviour including dumping in bins literally.they now have clickers to record how many people in total are using the pier.Has anyone heard anything else as the watchmen were openly talking about the future plans.

one of the pier blokes has been spouting stuff like that for bout 8 years, lost count of him saying the second gate is getting put back up and getting security on night times and port of tyne charging to go on pier . as time went by most of the regululars listened with deaf ears as they realised he liked to tell porkies ,only time will tell if this one is doing the same as he is only there temporary as one pier bloke is on the sick and there is a rumour one has just been sacked

as waco says, time will tell, and he shud know, spends more time on the pier than the pier bloke or anyone else for that matter!
have grown up fishing on the pier and have also herd these same stories/rumors especially around mackrel time!
not all fishermen smell, just browny!!

              bull****

ive been working in the port of tyne and informed the signs are up saying "no fishing"
because it keeps the port of tyne in the clear if theres any accidents
same as no cycling and other things on the notice
and as far as putting camera's and security guards on
              the bloke i spoke to
              burst out laughing
and he is one of the top blokes there

                piers

its easy to see why they want to close them a theres not many places left for that type of fishing easy access etc,,i was on blyth pier the other day and honestly never seen so much rubbish in one place beer cans every thing,,,if it were my pier i would close it to fisherman no hesitatation no matter whom was to blame,,the most annoying thing was a lot of the rubbish were in plastic bags and left,,,,,,would be easy to carry it home,,also the council could supply bins and empty them for a change....hey presto bins at strategic points this may take off

Graham, you got it spot on, i have made a few off the record enquiries and was told pretty much the same as what you have said.

I will also add that i have been reliably informed one of the lighthouse watchmen has been sacked
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

Apologies for the bad joke and the fact that there will definetly be a human story behind the sacking mullarkey

the pier watchman who's been telling all the porkies is the one who is been sacked .

and if ALL the ANGLERS respected the pier and discarded their rubbish properly and pee'd down the steps or over the side and not NOT p**s all over the place as a lot do we would not even be discussing this subject

                            Lets face it!

After the stuff i have noticed over the last few years while pier fishing it wouldn't surprise me if they chose to ban fishing etc on the piers!

I see kids as well as adults leaving carrier bags of litter crisp packets beer cans pop bottles bags from end tackle and one of my BIGGEST pet hates nests of fishing wire all over the piers!

Add to that using the lighthouse doorways as toilets and dead fish crabs and mushed up bait all over the floor and it paints a grim picture and the clean up bills mount up.

Most people I see sea fishing today are ignorant rude offensive and care little for other fishermen (women) there are not a lot of people left who respect the fish and the surroundings.

There is nothing worse than seeing kids walking off the pier with a carrierbag full of whiting and coalfish etc no bigger than 6" long but when I see the adults doing the same I get angry!

I used to find there was nothing better than spending the evening spinning for pollock on the west coast of scotland or shore fishing on the N/E coast etc but it's starting to lose it's magic because people are becoming lazy litter louts with foul mouth's and bladder problems.

I could see exactly where the council would be comming from if they were to implement these rules

I lose track of the amount of times I pick up rubbish before i start fishing incase others think it's mine and i have probably picked up and disposed of enough fishing wire to go round the globe a few times too.

I think there should be wardens on the piers handing out fines to the people who discard litter and pee in doorways etc. I also think they should hand out BANS to those who take home bags of 6" fish too!

                            Rant over

Fair rant though, I fish NE Scotland as well as Shields pier and even the more remote areas are full of rubbish, discarded cans, hooks, tackle & bait packaging etc etc etc etc. We are all tarred with the same brush, mind you would need a wheelie bin on Shields pier to pick the rubbish, fish guts and line up. Nice and quiet in the Winter though !!!! Roll on.
