hi there i was just wantin to ask a few people out there a few questions
right i bought a rod last night ron thompson axcellerator and when i put it together the rods just connect some of the way and i thought it just needed a good pull together so i did that and there is about 1 to 2 inch of the part in the middle of the rod showing i thought it would have been like a snug fit like every other rod i have and it was murder to pull apart again
so i thought these two peice have to be wrong so i phoned the lad i bought it off and explained about it but he said thats what it does everyone of these rod do this
its not that i dont believe him but it just looks pretty odd
    cheers lee

any replys are welcome anyone who has ron thompson and any info cheers

Hi mate, the gap between the two sections should be around one half to three quarters of an inch. If the gap is any greater, you run the risk of splitting the blank, any less and it means the spigot is getting a bit worn. If the two sections go right up to each other then there is no room for any further wear & it's likely that the joint will soon become loose. (If that's the case, spray a little matt-black paint from a car shop over the joint to build it up a little).

To get the sections to fit correctly, apply a little grease to the spigot, then push the sections of the rod together & start twisting back & forth. What your trying to do is wear the spigot down a little, & the grease will turn black as you wear away a little of the carbon. Every now & then wipe the joint clean, apply a bit more grease & start twisting again. This can be a long process if the gap you're trying to reduce is a large one - I recently had to get a replacement (2nd hand) tip for an old Apollo Mk1 which when put together had nearly a 3 inch gap, & it took me a whole evening sitting in front of the telly twisting & grinding the rod but I got there in the end! Got a few blisters mind, so it might be an idea to put some gloves on!

If your gap is only an inch or so, it shouldn't take you anywhere near as long - here's a pic to show you the sort of gap you should have:

Can't remember if the RT Axe has a spigot or push in tip, but the idea is the same. When you've got the right sort of gap, wash the joint & inside the rod-tip thoroughly with warm soapy water to clean of all the grease (use an old toothbrush or something to get up inside the blank) & allow to dry thoroughly. To help reduce further sticking problems rub a bit of soft pencil lead up & down the joint to help with lubrication.

One last thing, where you store your rods can affect them too. I stopped keeping mine out in the garage as I noticed they'd often get damp with condensation - don't know if it was this or the cold winter temperatures but sometimes even a rod I knew fitted OK sometimes wouldn't go together properly, so now they all live in the house & I've had no further problems.

        Hope this helps,

        cheers, Gary

Talking about stuck spiggots-i was climbing over the fence on the heugh a while back when i dropped my rod. The rod went down and bounced back up - the bottom hitting the floor first. When i tried to seperate them at the car they were stuck fast. Bent it into the Piccasso and drove home. Next day took to work and put into a vice and used hammer and chisel to seperate. Luckily it was my old abu second rod and the spiggot got a bit chewed up-but i seperated them and the old rod is still usable.
