  • Warkworth Pier today

Arrived at end of pier around 8 this morning to find the sea very flat despite the wind and crystal clear on the sea side. Loads of birds diving and loads of small baitfish acting very nervous near the surface. Conditions looked perfect and first cast with daylights took a couple of sandeel. Next cast sandeel and one mackerel, then literally 2-3 sandeels every cast for about 30 minutes. The tide was turning at this point and the water started to colour really bad from the Coquet and that was the fun over with. Caught loads of undersize coalies throughout the day and finally gave up around 3 o clock. The tide was very low and a sandbar was exposed between the ends of the piers.

As I left the pier the sun came out and I just know that if I waited and fished the tide in the water would have cleared up and I might have been rewarded but a warmed up sunday lunch beckoned.

The walk back to carpark is a killer.

Taking a bike next time. Years ago when I was a kid my dad used to drive the car right along to the dunes behind the pier. Loads of fun during higher tides when the road sometimes gets coverd. After the road was blocked off I took a trial bike along, the police were waiting for me up by the toilets on my return and I got a warning

          happy days
