  • Walkway 16/05

Decided to have a little trip south of the border () today, so paid my Ł1.70 for the tunnel (how come those machines never seem to count your coins correctly? ) and had a shot at the Walkway for a few hours this afternoon. It's only my second visit, and the first time in daylight - last time was the second half of the NvS NESA match when it was blowing a hoolie. It seems like a very nice mark; easy access & comfy to fish and a few other lads were down trying their luck.

Anyway, was straight into the little codlings, one nearly every cast till it went a bit dead around low water. Here's one of the little fellas:

I have to say, unlike the Ice-Box across the river, the ships seem to pass by really close - could clearly see this one had my name on it Mind you, unlike the Ice Hoose this seems like a snag free venue (?) never so much as bent a hook today, but it looks like you've got to avoid a few bouys up towards the top end.

I also had to endure a few brief showers (without my waterproof troosers) but it did make for a few minutes of picturesque scenery -

Apparently, according to a couple of lads I spoke to, it fishes better over the high tide, so I think I'll try that next time. Every cast for the first three hours of the flood resulted in something - sometimes a fish but always some big ribbon of weed or a plastic bag. The tally by the time I packed in at 7pm was 8 little codlings - all bar one taken on lugworm (they really didn't seem interested in the fresh crab at all ). Most other people seemed to be catching them as well but I never saw anything sizeable all afternoon. If anyone's got any tips on fishing here they'd be gladly received - I think I'll definitely give it another go soon.

Yeah, last time at the NESA comp we arrived halfway through, & Davey Milne & I made straight for the top end where, in the darkness, I failed to notice those big dans in the water in front of me - lost half a spool of line first cast! From what one of the lads was telling me though, it does supposedly fish better dusk & dawn or during the night.

The last lad I spoke to, fishing right at the bottom end, did have a few fish on crab & said he'd had a few decent coalies recently there (on crab) as well, but that was more towards dark. I think those little codlings just have a thing for lugworm!

It's not snag free place mate. On a small tide it's ok but a big tide can be a nightmare. Defo better than the ice house for that though

Yeah, it was a small tide when I was fishing, so guess I was just lucky! Some days on the other side it's the same - snag free one day, then a nightmare the next. Is it true it fishes better over the high tide?(I fished over low-water about 2 hrs down & 3 up).

A cracking report there Gary and obviously the photos make it even better mate ,I've fished there a few times myself , avoid big tides mate as the pull is too strong otherwise it's a canny venue .
You can take the lad out of Walker but .......

4 of us fished there today and it was a mare for losing tackle, I was 8 rigs and plunders down and the rest about the same. 1 plaice between us. Just as well the craik was good!

it's a brave man who fishes the walkway on a tide as big as you did.
I find that the Walkway fishes best when you fish the tide down. In my experience it normally picks up at two hours after high water.
