  • Last few trips out and some other stuff...

Haven't posted anything in a while so though I would post me last few fishing trips.

Sea fishing wise not much to report. Had a trip up Alnmouth a couple of weekends ago, trying for flatties. Fished two hours either side of low water with one Flounder caught between two of us.

Next trip out was a few hours on the Tyne at St Peter's. Was a canny little session with the bait only being in the water five minutes before getting rattles. Resulted in two decent flounders for me and two for me mate. Was using a three hook flapper with a different bait on each - mackeral, rag, lug and Asda king praws rotated round the hooks for each cast. The fish seemed to like the Asda prawns the best strangely, but if you do use them make sure you hook all the way through the body, if you didn't the fish were just nibbling the tail off and then nicking off, resulting in a few false strikes.

After that it was a trip up Cresswell / Duridge bay, nothing to report here although was a really nice sunset and a chilled out Sunday evening.

Last trip was last night, had some bait left over from Duridge so headed down St Peter's again for an hour or so, me and me mate managed a coalie each, again taken on the Asda prawns.

So all in all nothing exiting but have enjoyed getting out and making the most of the weather. Plus if yopu fancy a session but have missed the bait shops get yourself down to Asda for their frozen raw king prawns, and also their frozen raw prepared squid that worked in the winter for codling.

A few weeks back had me first ever trip out fly fishing. a few mates managed to get enough spare gear together to kit me out and we went up Derwent. It was a great day, loads of sunshine, started to get the hang of casting and managed five rainbows. Definately something I will do again, but not planning on buying all the gear just yet, need to save up some pennies.

    Some other stuff...

I'm looking to get meself some waders for next winter, from what I've menaged to read searching on here the Greys neoprene ones come recommended by quite a few people. I had a look on the Greys website and there are two models of neoprene ones, one for about £90 and the other £110, is it worth paying the bit extra for the £110 ones? Could you get away with wearing these for the fly in the summer or would you melt? One of me mates is having a trip up the warehouse at Alnwick at the weekend so plan on going up with him and checking them out. Anyone know of any shops doing them cheap at the minute? Do Greys themselves do discount for NESA memebers?

    *****************
After going up to Greys I'm thinking of having a go at float fishing somewhere up that way, which I've never done before. Thinking one of Cullernose, Dunstanborugh or Beadnel. Anyone got any recommendations and tips for float fishing these marks? I've been up them all in winter, just never float fished there.

Sorry for the wall of text.

    Cheers

greys waders are good, i own a pair myself, easy to move about in but can be a bit uncomfortable sometimes when climbing about on rock marks or say walking across hard ground in them as you can feel the studs through the sole of the boot, other than that top piece of kit, if ya dont like them have a look at he snowbee waders theyre also good

me pal has just bought some snowbee breathables direct from snowbee(found them on their website then bought them over the phone) for 50 sheets, bargain, old stock i think but who cares. i use breathables me self for my trout fishing and i think they're great for the summer months, but not the warmest early season up the derwent! if you only intend buying one set of waders you might be better with a set of neoprene's imo there a lot more durable and i'm sure you could put up with the extra centigrades on those 'scorching' summer days
      stop what ya deein and.........

I have the snowbee granite waders and they are warm and comfy, but not too impressed with the plastic clips. Should have been velcro! Overall though good waders.

As Dan says, the studs take a few trips out to get used to but apart from that the Greys are the best waders I have worn.

There are lots of nice Gulley's at Craster for float fishing. You will find good marks all the way along to the castle. If it was calm I used to often walk along to the Castle and fish just before it and just right beside it. A couple of good marks without having to walk all the way through or around the castle, not usually too busy either.

The Greys ones are very good and I'm always warm as toast in mine...as to the fly fishing cross over I couldn't comment although on a hot day you'd sweat your proverbials off IMHO...once wore mine and then hiked all the way from Craster to the castle on a mild winters day a couple of years ago...to say I was hot is an understatement

If I could afford it I'd buy a second more lightweight pair for the summer
            Ooh a new vid!

cheers for the replies, I'll try them out at the weekend up their shop. Would like a second pair for the summer, but can't afford it, so will just have to shove ice cubes down them when on the fly.

They are really comfy so you should get away with just a pair of shorts underneath them.
