So me and me mate are in the tackle shop in Redcar close to 5pm buying a slack handful of ragworm and frozen black worm.. the lassie behind the counter told us there was a club competition on tonight and we wished her luck as she was out tonight in it too. Never gave it a moments thought.
Me mate being from the area as I live in durham, thought it would be canny to go to Saltburn Pier at 9.30pm-ish just before hightide. Got there and it was full to the brim of anglers, which we naturaly thought were involved in this competition. So we decided to give it a miss as I personaly didnt want to embarress meself by setting up our makeshift rod rests made out of 2x2 and gaffer tape and other gear that looked like was built by the A-Team the night before. I also didnt want to tread on proffessionals toes by snagging one accidently in the neck or nocking one unconcious with me weight whilst i casted. Am still learning you see!
So me mate puts it to me to try South Gare, where we went last time few weeks back only casting once in a gale force hurricane and spent the whole session running after me tackle box. I says Aye nee botha!
We pulls up at South Gare and starts setting our rods up at the car just as all these fellers walked out of the pier gates with there head lights blaring away. one bloke comes up to us and asks, "oh you just starting are you?" sheepishly i answer "aye! thinking to meslf i know nowt about fishing and this was probably the wrong time to do it. Turns out these fellers were also in the competition and the bloke talking to me was from the bbc no less filming them fishing for some news reel. The bloke said that out of all of them and the hours and hours they spent on the pier only one whitey had been caught.
Anyhow me and mate bundled our stuff together and set out on the slow jaunter to the end of the pier. few blokes there with there flash looking tripod rests and expensive looking gear. I was impressed with the little blue led lights on the end of there rods. There was also a bloke up by the light house who was doing some wind servays. Me n me mate nodded and set up our stuff a bit away right at the end, Put our bait on the hook, casted and rested the rods on our freezer box.
An hour went by, couple blokes left. I decided to break the ice with the last guy standin who turned out to be dead canny. explained i was learnin to fish and knew very little he gave us bit advice about where to fish from as there was lots of rocks i kept loosing rigs on. For the cost of a tab the bloke gave me a weight as i had non left. just as the guy was leaving I went to reel in me line as i lost track at how long it had been in the water...about 11.30pm i pulled it up and there would you belive on the end - my first fish!!! I danced i jumped I sang. Bloke at the light house identified it as a whitey and appeared to be as over the moon as me and me mate.. we chucked it back in the sea and continiued.
Before midnight me and me mate mastered the art of staring at the tip of our rods with a windy up torch and they twitiched simultanously... pair of us pulled up flatties... then me mate caught another flatty as i caught a whity... bloke on the light house started to laugh his back off, explaing he had been watching all the pro anglers blanking for a fortnight and it takes me n me mate with neee knowledge or fancy gear to be baggin more fish in them few hours than all the season. Bloke on light house was great crack. Then just after 1am, me mate caught a codling! we were elated! We decided to call it a night at 2am very happy indeed! Took a flatty back to prove to our lass i can fish! Cant wait to get back out!!
Between 10pm - 2am
using flapper rigs with bait of black lug worm, ragworm and mackeral
rag was the favoured bite
3 whiteys
4 flatties
1 codling
Happy Days!
