For my last trip away this year I decided to head back down to North Wales with my brother and nephew. I’ve been to Anglesey a few times this year and thought it would be a good place to take my nephew to catch a few fish, he wanted to catch his first Wrasse and dog fish.
When we arrived the conditions weren’t looking to good with strong winds and rain but we set up ready to fish through the night. I set up using a pulley rig with a size 3/0 hook using squid and mackerel for bait. It was fish from the off mostly dog fish with the odd whiting and pouting in between. After a few hours of dog fish I had a better bite and struck into something which felt a bit heavier as I got it in it had to be hand balled up the wall it was a nice Bull Huss. I’m not sure how much it weighed as I didn’t have any scales with me.
The rest of the night was mostly the same with plenty dog fish etc.
As it started to get light the conditions stayed mostly the same windy and raining on and off. We were still catching plenty of dog fish then my rod arched over and didn’t spring back up I quickly grabbed it and struck and after a bit of a fight I landed a Thornback Ray.
Further into the day my nephew decided to put his IPad down for 2 minutes and do a bit fishing and it wasn’t long before he was into his very first dog fish. He was well impressed with it.
After a few more he wanted to catch a Wrasse so I set the LRF rod up so that he could have a bash down the side for them. I showed him how to do it and he took over and pretty much straight away he had his first ever Wrasse a little Gold sinney then a Ballen and a Corkwing. He was fascinated with these little Wrasse and continued to fish for them the rest of the day.
I wanted to try fishing the other side of the breakwater to see what was about so I changed my rig to a rotten bottom rig because its rough ground on the other side. I put some rag worm on and caught a Ballen Wrasse that was a bit bigger than we were getting from the other side of the breakwater.
After a few more of these I decided to move back over to the other side.
As it started to get dark we caught more dog fish, whiting and pouting. The wind started to get worse and the rain a bit heavier so we decided to call it a day and head back home. Even though the weather was a bit crappy we enjoyed it and had some decent fish.
