  • Blyth Pier 15 Feb - SBRAAC comp

I fished the end of Blyth Pier this evening along with Mike (Basscatcher Bob) and Phil Smithson. Quite a few other lads were out as well and coming on the reports didn't look promising. Headed straight for the end, and after a very quiet first 45 minutes or so Phil I think was first off the mark with a whiting. Soon after, I managed one myself, Then a bit later, Phil pulled in a dab, and again shortly after I managed to bag a flounder. All in all though, things were very quiet and hardly any bites were forthcoming for anybody.

Then a good bend in Phil's rod indicated something better coming in, and sure enough a good looking codling appeared at the side of the pier. However, it was barely hooked in the corner of the mouth, so he headed off for the beach to land it.

    Phil Smithson - codling 4lb 4oz

I was thinking that he by now had the comp pretty well sewn up when I noticed the tip of my rod sit up, so I went to wind up the slack (thinking my gripper had maybe popped) and found the line hanging straight down. Wound up a ton of slack and found a nice codling had taken my 1/0 manta with a bit of mackerel strip right down (better than any whiting!).

    Gary Wilson - codling 4lb 10oz

So at the end of the day I just pipped Phil with a total bag of 6lb dead against his total of 5lb 12oz, with (curiously!) near identical bags of a flatty (mine a flounder, his a dab), whiting and codling each.

Unfortunately Mike didn't catch & when we came off at 8pm I don't think much else had been had by anyone - all in all a bit of a strange evening!

    The two codlings

Cheers mate! By all means add the others, I've now got to e-mail these to Steve & Phil - still haven't got round to filleting yet, the fishbag's still outside the back door! Time for a quick belt of scotch & a fag, then get down to it if not too tired (may well just gut it & fling it in the fridge till the morning - they seem to fillet better when they've firmed up a bit !).

Well, just filleted the fish and not a sprat or anything else inside - just two plump roes and an empty stomach!
