  • new to fishing heres my 2 week history

Hello all i started fishing about 2 weeks ago, the last time being when i was about 12 or so. I bought a sonik sk4 14' and a diawa sea line reel and a sl30 slosh as a spare. I have been to the following using ragg, razor, lug.

1, ramp at back of alcan (north blyth) flatty about 2" which got off

    2, 7 stars jetty - nowt

    3, blyth beach - nowt

4, blyth pier (docks) - twice caught nowt - oh tell a lie i got a 3" cod wow!!

4, n/shields ice house - nowt except filled it with lead

    5, the middens - nowt

6, lynemouth back of power station both sides of pipe - nowt

When i say nowt i mean i didnt even have a bite except for the odd crab stripping my bait (blyth). I have fished at most tide states but only stayed at night for up to an hour or more. I hear the fishing has died off but with having little patience im getting a bit sick. I am out again on wednesday hopefully to look towards newbiggn beach, craster, cresswell, etc etc.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated, i get loads of tips off the guys i meet out there but yet to succeed.

PLEASE HELP if you can. I can even swap some rabbiting sport (one of my other hobbies)if anyone fancies some in return for the odd fishing outing.

    cheers chaps!!!!

Mosa, don't get disheartened mate, there are many seasoned anglers who over the last two weeks will of had the same record as you.
If you are stuck getting rid of the rabbits i could take some off your hands for the dog, I live in Cullercoats, unfortunately i no longer fish so can't take you anywhere, but will help you where I can.

One key thing that will impact the harbours/estuaries and rivermouths at the minute is the amount of freshwater coming down thanks to all the rainfall and snow melting on high ground. You need to look for a beach or rock mark that is away from any freshwater sources.

We'll start seeing a lot more flatfish from April onwards, mackeral shoals in the summer months and then back to the cod season as we head towards winter.

I've got little patience myself these days, i tend to arrive at a mark and if there's no bites at all I'll move on after an hour or sometimes less.

Blyth harbour has been pretty poor for a lot of years now. Ice house on the tyne is as you found out terrible for snags (try further up river, it's not as bad).

Wansbeck next to the boat sheds is a good spot for flatties, and some good sized ones at times, once they're appearing in numbers, you need a spell without rain and I find it best on a calm sea about 1:30 each side of the high tide. 2 hooks with ragworm and mackeral strip, vary your cast distance and area until you find a spot you get regular hits.

Cullercoats on the high tide from the south breakwater casting out to sea and into the imaginary channel going straight out between the breakwaters, can be quite snaggy so i use old spark plugs etc as weights to save lead, doesn't produce big numbers but i've had some nice cod from there over the years.

Trawl through this website, read angling magazines for a few months and ask anglers for advice wherever you see them. Best thing though - join a club - you'll learn more from other members than all the magazines put together.

if you have seen the amount of sand shifted from Tynemouth beach since they removed the old sewer pipe and acroos the rocks and into the harbour, a couple more big southerlies you will be able to walk across the harbour at low tide.

try fishing in some rough stuff.
the areas around st. marys, hartley, colywell bay and seaton sluice can be canny.

dosnt sound like you are doing anything wrong matey, alot of peeps have been blanking after stratching about for hours!

im sure the time you are putting in will pay off soon ;D

my mate started fishing a few years back his first 6 sessions he got zilch,on his seventh he hooked a cracking 6 ib.er now after three years he knows everthing about sea angling [or so he thinks ] and his best to date is a 14 lbs ling ,but what he told me was that in the first 6 seshes catching nowt he never once got dispondent , just keep trying mate you will get a decent fish in the end, mabey not this season though lol.
