  • Blyth pier 5th & 6th Feb

Decided to have a few chucks yesterday & fished about 3-8 pm, & took a light rod along as well (to waste a bit extra bait!). Unexpectedly got lots of knocks and ended up catching somewhere between 7-10 sizeable whiting (1 good keeper) - fishing from the bend. I also saw a good deal more coming from the end, so headed back tonight with some mackerel & rag as well.

Ended up tonight (fishing the end) with around 12-15 fish (kept losing count - again all sizeable, only kept a couple that were deep hooked & gave them away), fishing from about 4-10 pm this time. Good sport on the light gear, I had a big codling bait out on the big rod, but only caught 1 whiting on that, although I did get 1 good bite (a knock then 20 yards of slack line) which unfortunately came to nothing.

If you're a bit fed up (like me!) of having had little luck when the recent seas where running, it might be worth a shot tomorrow. For the most fun, take the light gear! I had fish on lug, rag, mussel/crab, but best results on mackerel strip.

Well Done on catching m8, as you say good sport keeps you busy while your waiting for that decent fish that nine times out of ten dosnt come.

Cheers mate, likewise - I've often thought we need some kind of NESA-handshake or something to identify ourselves. I'm sure a lot of people I chat to probably post on here.

BTW, nice to meet up with Ecoli last night too - Hi mate!

I only dropped the hooks a couple of sizes (2/0 Mantas instead of the usual 4 or 5/0s) - the rest of the end-gear was still 40lb hooklengths (helps cope with the little blighter's teeth as well) and a long, tapered 70lb leader.

With a 3-5 oz rod & 12lb mainline, I reckon this set-up would still enable me to lift anything Blyth Pier's likely to throw up - any surprises and I guess I'd be making the 400yd walk to the beach.

BTW, didn't pack the camera - I had to make room for the extra-large flask of coffee! Brrrrr!!!

Yeah, the light line is fun - mind you the little 6500 reel couldn't even winch up the couple of double-shots that I had, I had to handball them up. One little fish no problem mind.

Even on the big rod I always use 15lb on the pier or beach (very impressed with the new Ultima Powersteel BTW) - helps cope with the tide when there's a good sea on & other lads can't hold bottom. Always use heavy leaders & hooklengths & strong hooks though to cope with the lifting.

I have a number of doubles and many fish close to that weight using just 2/0 or 3/0 mantas. Good hooks and careful play of the fish will ensure that huge hooks aren't always essential. Remember large hooks and baits don't always catch big fish. Go no further than the lad fishing hendon earlier this season when he had a 15lber on size 2 hooks whilst fishing for whities.
