Cheers for all of the comments lads.
I'd just cast out with the last of my lug and within a few minutes I had a pretty positive bite, grabed my rod out of the rest and started winding. I fish with braid on my multiplier so could feel all everything that was going on. I thought it was an ok codling, like the 46 cm one I'd landed an hour earlier, but then it got lighter so said to Phill that the weight must have been my lead dragging along the sea bed; i always fish with a paternoster because I don't like the loss of bite detection when fishing with a pulley.
I must admit, it was a bit of a suprise when Phill collected my fish from the waters edge and shouted "it's a bass!, especially when I saw the size of it!
I've only had one other bass (3.5lb from Blyth) since I started fishing 3 seasons ago and that one felt like I was snagged while it was running but I think this one was slightly bigger.
I wasn't expecting much that night because of the conditions but it just shows, to use an old cliché, that you don't catch anything unless you have a line in the water. :-)
Cheers again!
Nathan
