Decided to have an "all - nighter" early Wednesday morning. Started off at Cresswell Carrs. I managed to get on about 1.00am, and fished it down to low water. Although there was a very big swell running, it was perfecly fishable fishing into the 'corner' with no loose weed around and not enough under-tow to wash your lead out. One other angler fishing into the same spot as me, and he caught the only fish whilst I was there (an undersize codling). Very dissapointing given the sea conditions. Whilst talking to the other angler, he told me he had been on Blyth pier from 6.30 'till 10.30 the previous night, but had managed only 2 small codling and very little had been caught for the number of rods.
Anyway I decided to give the pier a go myself, as the sea was falling away slowly. When I got to the pier (about 4.15 am) there were only 2 other anglers fishing beside the end. Both told me they had each lost fish and had had a handfull of bites. I decided to fish the 'elbow' but after 3 hours, I hadn't had a bite, despite a perfect big but smooth roll on the sea. Moved up towards the end and found that both the other lads had now landed a fish each. Took a while but eventually I managed a bite, which resulted in a bass of about 1.5 lbs. Couple of casts later I got a small knock followed by a classic 'slack liner'. Wound in the slack and made a good contact with something. Got it to the piers edge and it was a codling about 3 lbs. Unfortunately the swell washed it around the wooden foudations and when I eventualy got the line free to lift it, it threw the hook. Never got another bite after this. Packed up at 9.45am, and by then there were over 20 anglers on the pier, but I only saw one other fish caght (about 2lbs). Given the absolute perfect sea conditions (big smooth roll dying away) this has to be about the most dissapointing outing I have had since the last one, and the one before that .........ect. Know what I mean !!
