  • From Dawn 'til Dusk 11/10/08

On Saturday the weather was perfect for a fishing session at St Abbs with very light winds, sunshine and a calm sea forecast, it looked ideal for wetting a line from this rock anglers paradise.

I arrived just before daybreak and was met by the best weather conditions that I have had up there this year with no wind and a flattish sea, things looked great!

I had six bags of ragworm and 15 peeler crab for bait along with various lures to chuck at them today.

To the fishing, well I really hope to catch a Ballan Wrasse over 5lb from this area soon but in all honesty it's probably not going to happen this year now, maybe next year it will? Out went my peeler crab bait, this rod I left propped up on a rock while I got down to a bit of spinning and floatfishing.

Fifteen minutes quickly went by without a touch and then my ratchet screached alerting me to something showing an interest in my crab bait.

Result this fine fella, not quite a 5lb'er but a good one all the same.

More Wrasse of various sizes followed, with a couple of cracking bites and good fish lost! These really are Henry Gilbey style knuckle biting moments, fish on, fish off, very frustrating, doh!

I had plenty of Wrasse action up to high tide but the 5lb'er still eludes me!

Seven Wrasse in total and then the Mackeral appeared in force. Yes I did say "Mackeral" but don't expect too many from South Shields pier over the next few weeks as they do like the deep, clear water off St Abbs far better. However they do seem to be hanging around later and later after each Summer and who knows with global warming we may soon be able to catch them all year round in the North Sea.

Not a lot was interested in my spinner today but I did manage to wangle out this Codling on the shiny fella, which was a pleasant surprise.

On with the float and ragworm for bait, result loads of Coalfish that gave me some exciting sport along with another Ballan Wrasse to cap off a great days fishing.

It was such a great day I extended my stay until dusk which was as long as I could possibly stay safely but I did get wrong off wor lass for getting home late! Women, eh!, they just don't understand do they.

    Tightlines, Dave.

Cracking session there JV, some superb looking Wrasse too.

I wouldn't count on global warming, warming anything except Al Gores bank balance any time soon though .

That's a cracking Ling Gary, I have never caught one up there yet, do you think I would stand a good chance during darkness? I would also love to catch a Catfish/Wolfish from the area, if anyone has any tips I would love to hear them.
