Steven do you mind if i ask what you mean by lures.
If you fish from a beach or pier you need bait such as ragworm or mackeral on hooks and rigs.
If you fish from the pier you cast it into the water and wait. The thing about the pier is its deep water.
Sorry to sound like a know all but it sounds like you remind me of the lad me and insano were watching the other week off Steetly who was still using feathers.

Seriously???? do you want a new fishing buddy? Lol...
I havn't had that many cod in years
It's a thin line that seperates an Angler from a madman standing on the beach in january at midnight in -5 degrees with a northerly wind blowing in your face

I had my big rod loaded with worms and to give me something to do while waiting for the big bite was spinning with a smaller rod with obvious lack of success.
I don't believe that there are any fish in the North Sea.

you are not alone, got a result from last night only one out of thirteen anglers weighed in. I had lovely fresh cod and ling for dinner tonight, didnt catch them just scrounged them from the charter skippers and open events, find it easier that way
