  • South Shields Groyne, 17/9

Went down to the pier this evening with child in tow just before high tide, but it was rather busy so I reluctantly took him over to the Groyne. Not too keen fishing there as it's pretty heavy on the tackle from what I remember.

First cast, I pulled in an undersized Whiting and thought we could be in for some fun. Then every cast after that we lost our gear. I stuck a two hook flapper on for a bit and after 5 minutes or so got a stonking bite. But, whilst retrieving it it got snagged and I lost the lot. Felt like a canny fish, or maybe it was two.

Think I'll be giving it a miss from this day forward!! Unless someone knows of any part of it that isn't a tackle graveyard?? I was casting towards Tynemouth Priory.

Aye, got the bairn out anyway. He wanted to spin but I said I thought he'd be wasting his time this time of year, and stood more chance of catching a Whiting by bait fishing.

Big tide today like wasn't it??? The wash off the Pilot boat nearly came onto the Groyne. Thought we were gonna get washed off! And by Christ, there's some crap floating down the river and on the beaches off the floodwater isn't there?!!?
