Fished SSP around the 40's on Saturday morning using King Rag on a 2 hook flapper. Was hoping for a Codling or a Plaice. Sport was a bit slow but I managed my first fish, a small Plaice which went back, last fish was a 38 cm Codling which would have gone back but it was deep hooked and wouldn't have survived so I had to keep it. (Was hoping for a nice one like the 4lber I saw caught but I will have to keep hoping and trying). I also pulled in an eater Crab but it was a bit too small to keep so it went back.
But the best fish of the session was the second fish. The bite was a sudden slack line bite and I grabbed the rod thinking 'big Coddy' and felt the fish bouncing away on the other end so I struck into it and felt a pleasant fight back. The fish fought well all the way in and stayed deep so I couldn't see it over the wall until the last minute when it came to the surface and I was still not sure what it was. When I started lifting though I realised that it was not nearly as big as the fight suggested. When it came over the wall I realised that it was a Grey gurnard with all of its fins splayed out, about 30 to 35 cm's.
It felt much bigger before it came out I guess with those wide side fins and big dorsal fin they can fight much harder than most fish so they feel bigger, good fun though. It went back to fight another day.
All in all a good couple of hours getting burnt in the sun and even saw a couple of bombers leaving the airshow which flew directly overhead.
