  • Usan 2014

Just back from our trip to Usan. We thought it would be an unsettled week and so it proved. We arrived last Saturday and though we'd missed the tide we had a chuck on the Black Rock at Usan. We deliberately got stuck on for high water but, apart from a small codling for Rod, we blanked. There were 5 other guys around and there were only 2 more small fish....not the best of starts.

Sunday saw us on the north side of Usan and we had a bit more luck with half a dozen fresh run codling with this being the best:

Tuesday we were at Boddin Point, back amongst the weirs on a pretty nice day and a few fish to go with it:

We had a couple of night trips with a few fish and some nice views:

Best day was Thursday, back at Boddin. It's funny how 2 blokes can fish, basically, the same marks and one catches 8 fish before the other one has a bite (I'll let you decide who's who lol) We had fish of 8lb, 7lb, 6lb, 5lb, a couple of 4lbers, a couple of 3lbers and a little one before someone saved face with a good 5lber.

Weather was dodgy at times and we did no spinning for the second year running as the water was too thick. We also got a couple of drookings:

Best weather was at Auchmithie but it produced the worst results with only 3 small codling.

Nice going David - I must try and get up there sometime during the daytime - I've only ever been up in pitch darkness in winter so have no idea what the place actually looks like, other than from other people's pictures!

Came across this a while back that someone had posted on WSF from Creel magazine, august 1964. The drawing makes it look very laid-back and relaxed, but in reality you'd often put a fair bit of grunt into it!

Not just for lobbing either - I know one or two of the old hands who can put a plain lead close to 150 yards - not bad with 60lb line straight through! I'm a bit rusty with mine but now that I've replaced the busted tip-ring I must get out and practice with it again!

We take a load of frozen crab with us Reg but this year we brought most of it back thanks to sussing out a local supply. Not much skin left on the fingers mind you.
