Went on a trip out today with Joe Montgomery and Steve Bingham to The Holderness coast area with smoothhounds, rays and maybe a bass being our targets. We got there an hour or so before low water and scoped the area out. The fishing was poor for the first few hours with nothing caught by any of us then about half way up the tide the fish came on. First Joe had a thornback and then Steve pulled in a turbot. not long after this my rod tip went mental and I struck into what felt like a good fish which turned out to be my very first bass weighing in at 2.36lbs.
Steve got another bass before we had to climb up on to the cliffs as the water was coming to the very top of the beach. The fish continued to come with Joe getting a smoothhound and Steve getting another bass.
Then I struck into something heavy which turned out to be a thornback around the 4lb mark.
Some lads fishing along from us were pulling quite a few hounds so I was hopeful that I would get one. Not long after I got a rattle on the tip and pulled in my first smoothhound.
Apart from the slow start the day could not have been better with my 3 target species caught and the best weather of the year so far, T shirt weather all day. A fantastic day with some great craic, looking forward to getting away a few more times this year.
Also huge thanks to the guy who gave us some excellent advice. You know who you are.
