Had a few hours on the pier last night, got there just before 6pm with HT half eight. Was a few lads already down so got set up about 50 yards short of the drum, plan was to fish two rods one baited with sandeel on a long and low hoping for a Woofer or a Ray and the other scratching for whatever might be out there baited with rag and bluey.
First hour with just the scrtatching rod was quiet then first cast with the sandeel saw a lovely bite just moments after putting the rod in the tripod. Champion I thought, first cast and I might be into my target species so I was a bit dismayed to get the fish to the side and lift this feller onto the pier:
A nice Coalie but I'd have much preferred a dogfish
Anyways as we hit the last couple of hours of the flood it was like a switch had been flicked and the scratching rod was a fish a cast. First up was my first Dab of the year, a bit manky looking but they all count for the species hunt:
and then it was a procession of Flounders, all a decent size of between 27 and 32cm. I also hooked into a nice Lobster but the bugger let go of the hook as I was lifting him up the pier.
The tide turned and that was it, no more bites either short or long. Apart from the Coalie nothing touched the sandeel and the Flounders / Dab all came to ragworm. Stuck it out until half ten more in hope than expectation but by then I had the pier to myself, the wind was howling and it started to rain. Sea was a bit lumpy and it was more like fishing in late October than late spring; I was all floatied up when this time of year I'd normally be fishing in shorts (at least until the sun goes down).
Still, it was good to be out and for the first time in a couple of months I troubled Mike to update the my species hunt tally, it would just be nice if the winds would drop and summer would at least try to make an appearance...
