  • Horden 4th May

Fished the tide up at Horden yesterday with a nice sea running and good colour. Was hoping for a spring codling, a bonus Bass or maybe even a Ray. Although probably a bit early and not flat enough for the latter from what I hear.
Stuck a rod out at range with crab on a long and low 2/0 single hook. 2 hook flapper with 1/0s king rag and bluey just past the breakers at maybe 40 yards.
Amazingly is was a bite a cast on both rods. Endless tommy codlings with a few flounder and coleys in the mix. Had 3 double shots on the close rod. Just like fishing the Tyne on one of those days were there is nothing over half a pound.
So a bit frustrating but 3 or 4 hours flew by in decent weather. That flood bank is a bit of a clamber down mind. Ended up fishing off the top which was better tbh.

Bloody hell, a report from the future! Any chance you could let me know what the lottery numbers were tonight, or failing that what I'm going to catch on Monday night

On a serious note, well done on a busy session. IIRC there were loads of Tommys around this time last year so hopefully it bodes well for another decent autumn / winter season. As for the shelf, that is what is still left from when they used to dump all the colliery spoil in the sea, it gives you a good idea of how much the beach was changed by the dumping and now how much it is changing back now the sea is gradually washing it away. You are right though that it is a bit if a bugger to get up and down

Yes its getting a bit difficult to get down, there are spots that are easier but it changes so often.

Not a bad session though mate nice to see a report up for Horden

Was down there last night. Little tommy and a good sized whitie on sand eel.

A really good knock missed just after the tide turned. Hate it when that happens as the rod was really going some.

Word of warning though. If you're new to the beach make sure you know how you'll get onto the upper bank if the tide comes too close for comfort. 1st time I went down there it had been a really wet couple of weeks and the bank was all slimy clay and I just couldn't climb up. I had to run like hell to the ramp about 200 yards further down the beach.

Best location is supposed to be in front of the white rock about 300yds up from the ramp. There are mussel beds in that location apparently.

Also for those who prefer to bring back all their rigs every cast, the beach is about as clean as you can get. I haven't lost a lead there in any of the sessions I can remember.
Told the missus I was going on a diet. I'd only eat what I caught
