Decided to go and drown a few worms last night (real reason was to escape my daughter's 13th birthday sleepover party with her 8 mates) and given recent lack of fish on the beaches went to the Rat House at Roker. Armed with lug, rag, crab and mackeral I fished from low water (8pm) until 1am. I really wasn't expecting anything but ended up with 3 good sized coalies, a dinner plate size flattie and, at long last, one of those elusive codling (about 2lbs and caught on rag). All in all a very enjoyable session.When I got back home the party was still going and they all insisted on seeing the fish - not sure they will want to do that again!!!

Rat House
There were four or five at the end of the Old Pier and a group of 6 (fishermen!!!) who had a huge fire going along the side of the yacht club and were doing their best to keep the off licences going! There were a couple of others who came down for a few hours - didn't see anything else of size caught although a couple of guys who came off the end of the pier said they had caught some whities.Comment

I was at the end of the path as you come on to the pier from the car park. Didn't see anyone from the pier.Comment

The Ratty is a really good mark full stop. It is particularly good for new starters, kids and people with mobility problems. As is often the case with these marks it is very close to residential areas and unfortunately as is also the case - is completely taken the **** out of by some anglers. I am most surprised by the fact that people are still allowed to fish there
If I lived in any of those flats round there, sea angler or not I'd be hard pushed to argue my own cause.

It's idiots like these guys who get the majority of us a bad name. They were burning wood and cardboard but then they somehow managed to find 3 easy chairs from somewhere. At first they were sitting on them but it didn't take long before they started to set fire to one. At this point I left - the problem is its not worth trying to say anything to them as they are that ignorant they don't care what they are doing.
