  • Trow Rocks 21/03/14

It looked like it was going to be a nice morning for species hunting so I headed down to Trow Rocks in South Shields to fish the whole of the flood tide and a bit after. Two rods, two hook flapper rigs (2/0 and 4). Baits rag, bluey, raw prawn and mackerel.

I arrived at midnight bang on low water and although it was a big tide the water wasn't as far away as I had expected. There was a small swell maybe 2ft and it was quite windy but the cliffs blocked some of it off. I trecked out across the sand and got my first baits in the water resulting in a very small tommy and a 5B rockling in the first couple of casts. I spent the rest of the session backing up as the tide got closer, sometimes having to move twice per cast, and eventually ended up on top of the stones with my back to the cliff at high water. Just the odd fish up to mid tide then it picked up and I had a few more after that - more tommies, rocklings, coleys, flounders and to finish a dab. Final count was 13 fish, nothing sized biggest one 32cm. The wind had dropped off by then too and it turned into a pleasant morning with a nice sunrise. I packed in around 6.30am. Five species but all ones I already have in the hunt. Doh! Oh well, maybe next time

Canny session Mike. Loads of species just not the right ones lol. With that wind dropping I'm going to try to get out tonight, thinking of trying that area.

Might as well Mark it's a nice place to fish. It was better around HW and it's deeper then too due to the steep bank beside the cliff so there's a good chance of a few species. I was hoping for a plaice but there were none about this morning.

Concrete platform? Do you mean the big flat rock in the middle of the bay that juts out?
