Well went along full of expectation. Sea was flat and wind S.W. Water had a nice colour thought might be ok but did,nt hold my breath. Set up off the end with two rods (thanks for the extra bait beachlover).
Loaded some fresh macky on number 2 rod and soon as it hit the water banging away with whities.
Loaded big rag on other rod with razer and out it went on a long cast. Had a few knocks and pulled in more whitey. Fished from 2pm until 10pm. Did not get a cod. Only saw two landed. One actually took macky bait. Lovely coloured pound an halfer caght by oap next to me. This guy must have had a carrier bag and a half of whiteys he had caught as well.
Next cod caught by lads coming on late. Nice fish about 4lb.
All in all though it would appear the influx of cod has left. Probs with the wind turning. Story of my life. Still i got some nice size whities and they have been filleted and are in the freezer.
NE Tackle are also getting some drop nets in. Guys these are a must on this pier because there is some big fish out there.An its a long way up the side.
One guy on the end had made his own net out of an old bicycle wheel. It looked really good.

we used to make bike wheel nets years ago and use them of seaham peirs for lobsters and crabs while fishing

Just a bit too late for the cod eh Mick, that's the story of my life as well, if I had a pound for the amount of times people have said "you should have been here last night" I would have retired and live in a lovely house right by the sea.

Never mind at least you had a bit sport with the Whiting and you ended up with something in the freezer. Soon as the sea picks up again I'll be out myself, keep in touch.

Yea we used to. Tie a cods head on the top between the metal coat hangers. The guy on the pier today had a jim dandy wheel. Looked like an alloy racing cycle type. Very professional looking. Thought he had paid cash in a shop for it. Netting looked the biz as well. The rope also looked canny. Bright yellow nylon stuff. Very nice bit of kit and cheap to.
If you got a ten pounder you would have wanted that net.

Even with a drop net it still won't be that easy to get a fish up at Steetly, I wouldn't fancy lying over the pipe and pulling something quite heavy up the side. It's a good pier for hooking fish but it's a bad pier to fish on, give me Blyth pier anyday, trouble is it's not as productive as Steetly.

Re the netting i suppose a big fish could be walked round the front of the pier to the metal ladders which go over the pipe to the left as you walk up the pier and netted there quite safely.Tricky but better than losing a doubler.
