  • South Shields Pier 27/02/14

    I fished SSP last night a couple of hours either side of HW. As I arrived a lad coming off the end said he had been there six hours and blanked so I decided to set up lower down the pier in case that was where the fish were. I settled just past the rubble next to the "slippery when wet" sign and fished with two rods, one on the seaward side and one on the harbour side. Baits were lug, frozen blacks, mackerel, bluey, dirty squid and raw prawn.

    It was a pleasant night with no wind and a small swell on the sea (3ft or so) and just me and a lad on the 44 on the whole pier so a nice chilled out evening in store. I was getting plenty of knocks from the off but they were all small ones. I caught a canny few undersized codling from the seaward side and two shore rocklings from the harbour side which was handy as I needed one for the species hunt All fish were caught on lug, squid/lug combos and prawn/lug combos. The fish baits went untouched with not a single knock on them. I missed a good knock on the seaward side that didn't hook up and looked like it would have been my only sized fish of the session, shame. I packed in about 5am, nothing to take home for tea but an enjoyable session all the same.

        That was me on the 44, I spoke to you on my way off.

        I just had 2 codling around the same size as yours; took one on squid the other on lug. I was getting good knocks all night but they just weren't taking the hook, and I tried a few different hook sizes, and different baits. And like you - I had no knocks at all when I had bluey on.

        It was a nice night, no wind, fairly mild, and very quiet on the pier.

        Well done on your catches;

        and thank you very much to the lad who was walking off the end who gave me a couple of batteries for my tip light
