  • Flat rock seaham 10/11/07

Fished the flat rock last night to get above, the surf. Turned out to be a good choice. 6 Cod kept for the table, biggest was 6lb 14oz smallest 3lb straight. I had 4 smaller fish also.

Not the easiest of conditions, but the shelter of the cliff behind made it much easier. All fish taken on lug and razor.

It's at the very south end of the Blast beach. There is a footpath that leads along the cliff tops starting at noses point, it runs adjacent to the railway line. Follow that for about half a mile then you come to a bridge that crosses the railway line. When you get to that bridge turn left and follow the tracks down the farmers field to the cliff edge. Once you get to the edge walk about 30yds right and look down, you will see a flat ledge protruding. It's a scary climb down the homemade steps (cut into the mud) but worth it once you're down. It produces fish no matter where you cast but I prefer casting 2 0'clock of my position, about 60 yds. There's a good hole there and that's where all my fish came from. You can get 3 people down comfortably and 4 at a push. Landing fish can be tricky but a long leader helps.

N.B. This is a dangerous mark and I wouldn't advise going alone, don't go too close to the edge. One slip in a medium swell and you've had it, regardless if you have a flotation suit or not. There are lots of jagged rocks underneath, and once a wave puts you on there you've had it.

I don't mean to scare anyone off, just rather everyone took care.

the mark you are talking about is Hawthorn Point. There's a couple of more good shots
to the right and to the left of this mark but the one you're describing is the best.
It's one of the finest marks in the whole of the North East and is a noted hot spot.
It will even produce fish when the sea is flat, as long as it's a spring tide.
It's without doubt my favourite mark in and around Seaham but it's getting just
a little too far away for an old bass turd like me.
Well done on your session mate.

as west wind say hell of a shot best north east mark i reckon but a canny walk flat rock to me is hawthorn point then you also have the south point as westwind also says you have to be very careful ,i rate the chemical beach very highly but the point beats it you can fish down below off rocks at low watr nice hole there you can also fish at low water on point on a small tide .only prob with this mark you never have it to yourself.paul westmoorland has had some tremendous bags off here
did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

Flat rock is at Hawthorn Point, Hawthorn Point is the end of Seaham and the beginning of Hawthorn. It is a hell of a hike to get there but when you catch like I did on Sat it's sooo worth it, especially with a 27lb 4oz bag of cod The beach just south of there (the Cove) is also a good shot.
