My second Seaham club match of the year today, the plan had been to fish the pier but by the time I got to registration all the pier pegs were gone Could have fished below 75 I suppose but after a bit think in the car I decided to head for Hendon Prom.

Got there at half eleven and with HT not till 4:20 and a big tide surprise surprise there was hardly any water there. Was going to head for the end of the prom but there were loads of old bill down there and it was cordoned off so I ended up a couple of bays down from the pipe where the ramp goes down on to the beach. Decided scratching was order of the day so got set up with a two hook clipdown rig, lug on one and bluey on the other and trudged down on to the sand to belt it out.

Fifteen minutes later I pulled in to change bait and found a little codlet on the lugworm so at least the blank was saved:

A few casts later the curse of firt-castitis was banished with a nice little Flounder coming to bluey

Things were pretty slow but at least the tide was flooding in fairly quickly. I did manage and other little codlet and a Flounder barely the size of my palm and then just after three pm I got my first reasonable bite, another decent pull and I lifted in to what felt a slightly better fish and after negotiating it through the backwash I had my first size codling of 2014

Fished on for the last two hours of the comp with no further luck, then on the very last cast as I was pulling in to pack away and head for the weigh in I landed the worlds littlest Whiting

All in all a canny day out, half a dozen fish including tomorrow nights tea. The codlets and the whiting took straight lugworm while both flounder and the better codling took bluey. All fish came at long range and when I didn't have a fish the baits were coming back untouched so no bother with the crabs today which is always a bonus

No idea, they had a couple of cars and an unmarked van down there, they were there when I got there and finally left a couple of hours later so whatever it was they were there for a good while

Aye seems strange, I fished Ryhope cliffs for an odd hour over high water this evening, I could see a bobby and a railtrack worker on the line.

Well done. Me and my mate fished Roker beach today in club comp. Lots of small stuff with just a decent whitey.

Well done on the catches, looks like a good session with a few different species.

How is your scratching rig made up? I usually just use one hook, or a pennel, on either a flapper, pulley or running ledger. I'm gonna make up some scratching rigs, was thinking, 6' rig body, three 12" snoods, size 2 aberdeens?
