On South Shields Pier nobody can hear you scream !
(at 2am when everyone else has gone home )

Well me and Pete from Shields headed down the pier hoping for some coddy action. I had bought some dirty squid to try for the first time and had also stocked up on blow lug and brought along a bit of bluey. Pete had some blacks and some other stuff that I have forgotten lol (sorry Pete). Anyway, we arrived about 8.40pm, the plan was to fish up and over high tide and pack in around 2am when the forecasted winds were expected to arrive. We also planned to be reasonably mobile and fish our way up the pier trying various marks getting to the end in time for the ebb.

I was keen to fish the rougher nastier marks using potatoes for sinkers so we started at the rubble. I chucked my baits amongst the boulders while Pete fished the seaward side. It wasn't long before I caught my first rockling, a nice little shore rockling at 24cm. Closely followed by another and then another bigger one at 26cm. All caught on lug. There must have been a shoal of them right in front of me. Pete decided to get in on the action and moved over to my side and pulled in a nice one 26.5cm. Ha! They were out in force tonight.

So we decided to move up the pier a bit and fish the first bend just along from the post. No action there so we moved up to the second gate. I fished the harbour side and Pete fished seaward again. After a short while my rod tip bounced and I ran over and pulled into the weight of a nice fish. Not a rockling this time then. It turned out to be a nice codling which was 2lb exactly on my scales and was caught on a dirty squid and bluey combo. Champion. Something to take home for tea . Then my other rod twitched and I pulled in, yes you guessed it, another rockling! Aarrghhh.

It was high water now and I was running low on potatoes so we moved up to the blocks. Nothing happening there, harbour or seaward side, so we moved onto the end. An hour or so of static rod tips and we decided to call it a night just after 2am. I had run out of potatoes and the wind was getting strong so we headed off.

Exactly my point. The rocklings tend to bugger off so they don't end up there ! Although these were canny size Rockling, must fancy there chances ! Lol !

North East marine biologists are reporting that the kelp is being strangled by potato plants from the Tyne to St Mary's, can't think why.

It's quite comical to watch and the splash when they hit the water is hilarious but it's bloody effective.

I though potatoes floated-never heard that one before-mind I do like the idea of pebbles off the beach with wires glued to them. Well done on the fishing least your not blanking.
