Just had a few hours down jarrow riverside.

36cm Whiting first cast at 7pm,
30cm Codling last cast at 10pm, nothing in between.

Both on runnidown and 2/0 hooks.

Was getting loads of knocks all night, might of been crabs, but more like fish knocks, maybe they weren't too keen on the runnidown.

least you didnt blank mate i tried hebburn marina couple weeks back had same problem cracking knocks a few were fish most were vrabs

Good advice about the 2/0 hooks. I always use 4/0s this time of year but finding the fish really shy this year. I'm getting more results with 2/0s also. Even over the rocks and on the beach fish shying away from big baits and taking single worms/crab. Nice whiting by the way bigger to come from the Tyne

was down st peters for a few hours Tuesday,,me and my lass,,she had some canny size flatties and a cod about 1and half pound,,just by casting a few feet out 11 fish all in on her little pink rod,,me 5 lol,,

When scratching go as small as size 2's. You'll pick more fish up this way. Small baits too.

good session. same at jarrow - often better just with a little lob, definatley more flatties closer in.

at jarrow Ive found the water seems to be really shallow down the middle of the river, so better off close in or beyond the middle (which I can only do with a bit of wind assisstance!)

cheers, I usually do start dropping the size down, and maybe should have last night, but after the whitey on the first cast (which was big enough for 2/0's) I thought there might have been more so just stuck with the 2/0.

You will be amazed at what will take a 2/0 hook mate. I've had 4" codling, colies etc all on size 2/0 and even bigger. In the river I tend to just stick to a 1 or 1/0 most of the time and use the bigger stronger hooks from the piers and rocks etc. If you getting knocks and not hooking into fish there is a good likelyhood it's crabs nibbling your baits. We need a good hard frost to start killing them all off. Well done on the whiting... give it a few months feeding and they will fatten up nicely!!

I caught a cod off Horden couple year back, must have been 10cm tops...couldnt believe how tiny it was.
Best thing about it - taken on a 6/0 hook and big bait I was experimenting with

Since then I have not taken to much care with hook sizes, mind I never drop as low as 2/0
